Richard Stark
Richard Stark — The Founder of Chrome Hearts
Every great brand has a person behind it, and for Chrome Hearts that person is Richard Stark. He did not set out to build a global luxury empire. He set out to make things properly — and in doing so, created one of the most influential and uncompromising brands in modern fashion.
From a Los Angeles Workshop
In 1988, Richard Stark began making leather riding gear in Los Angeles. A motorcycle enthusiast frustrated by the lack of well-made gear, he started crafting his own — heavy, durable, hand-finished leather pieces built to a standard he could not find elsewhere. Working alongside a small group of skilled craftsmen, he soon expanded into sterling silver hardware and jewellery, applying the same obsessive attention to detail.
These early pieces were unlike anything else on the market. Where luxury fashion of the era leaned polished and refined, Stark’s work was raw, bold, and unmistakably hand-made. It carried weight, both literally and in character.
Building a Brand Without Advertising
What happened next is the part that makes Chrome Hearts unique. Stark never ran traditional advertising campaigns. He never chased trends or mass production. Instead, the work spoke for itself. Rock musicians discovered the pieces first, drawn to their individuality and craftsmanship. Artists, designers, and collectors followed. The brand grew entirely through word of mouth and genuine admiration — a rise almost unheard of in the fashion industry.
By keeping production limited and quality absolute, Stark turned Chrome Hearts into something rare: a brand that became enormous without ever feeling mass-market. In 1992 the brand even received a Council of Fashion Designers of America award, cementing its place in the fashion world while staying true to its roots.
A Philosophy That Endures
Decades later, Richard Stark’s original philosophy still defines everything Chrome Hearts produces. Pieces are still made by hand, still produced in limited numbers, and still built around sterling silver, leather, and bold Gothic design. The cross, the dagger, and the fleur-de-lis remain as recognisable as ever.
That consistency is why a Chrome Hearts ring or hoodie from years ago can still command more than its original price today. It is the legacy of one craftsman’s refusal to compromise — and it is the standard we honour with every piece in our collection.
